18 - The Treasure Room

This week we visited San Francisco's International Art Museum of America, which was so strange we will never forget it. We also discuss the StART Up art fair, and whether the bay is provincial. Also the CPT T-shirt contest is still going on, and we're looking for someone to join our button maker time share!

Send your T-shirt designs in to KateRhoades@gmail.com!

  2. I was just in the IAMA yesterday for the first time. I gotta say, that fake shiny hot pink blobby coral on the first floor was right up my alley :). That and the home insulation foam framed holograms kinda blew my mind. Overall the gallery felt quite post-internet with all its incongruent juxtapositions (neo-classical architecture + strange foam sculptures + old European paintings + holograms + Chinese lions etc). I think what made it weird was the way the placards were constantly trying to sing the praises and justify the artwork's grandiosity. If they replaced those with regular wall labels they would totally pass as contemporary art. More than anything the whole place made me think of the Museum of Jurassic Technology...the venue itself is somebody's off-kilter conceptual art project. Also it seemed inspired by the Bellybutton of Buddha episode of Legends of the Hidden Temple https://youtu.be/EzZF5kpvzi0.
